A Guide to Respecting Artistry

Hello all, and allow me to add ‘Happy Hump Day’! Welcome to the middle of the week, and pleasantries aside, I want to discuss with all of you fine people the recent rant of a certain loudmouthed rapper (I think for all of you who watched Sunday night’s musical award show, you know where I’m going with this). The 57th annual Grammy Awards was indeed a night of muscial highs but also of unfortunate lows, most notably the oh-so public dis of the incredibly talented artist Beck.

In what most believed to be a self deprecating joke, the ever-disrespectful Kanye West stage-bombed Beck’s acceptance speech when he was humbly accepting the award for Album of the Year, a move USA Today humorously dubbed “Kanye-interruptus”. However, after quickly leaving the stage, most likely thought we were seeing a lighter side of Mr. West…until a post-Grammy interview in which he continued his campaign for the Most Disgusting Human Being on the Planet (and for those of you who like Kanye, please don’t be upset-there’s certainly other people in the running for this fictitious award!).

In summation, Kanye essentially went off on the musical wonder that is Beck saying he should “respect artistry” and said he should have given his award to Beyonce. Kanye, let me address you directly in this blog along with readers in cyberspace and tell you that you most certainly do not respect artistry yourself. Still beyond infuriated by his disrespectful monologue of contempt, please allow me extend some tips for “respecting artistry”:

1. A true artist allows their art to speak for itself. By proving yourself to be a royal a**hole by trashing and bad-mouthing everyone in existence, it does not make you look better nor will it make you any better of an artist. Kanye, you’re a talented person, so stick to what you do best, music, and don’t be an insufferable bully to others.
2. Art is subjective. Respect the art and creativity of those around you please. Simply because you don’t like or appreciate something does not automatically make it garbage not worthy of accolades or acclaim.
3. Be a beliver in musical karma. Kanye, your opinion, which you seem to like to express at any given opportunity, is not the only one that matters. I know you seem to operate under this presumption, as well as the notion that Beyonce deserves every award in existence, but perhaps consider chanting each morning ‘There are other people with their own voices and opinions.’ Be respectful and kind to others, and perhaps it will be repaid to you in the future.

Friends, thank you for reviewing my guide to respecting artistry, which can also be considered a guide for being a decent human being. Not to end on an overly “We are the world” note, but we should all respect and be kind to others, because if we did maybe this world would be a more compassionate place to coexist. Until next time, be excellent to each other in the infamous words of Bill and Ted…and party on dude!
