Summer Lovin’!
Warm sunshiney greetings all!It has been much too long since we have been united in cyber land and nothing makes me happier than to write to all of you today.Summer brings a rather toothy grin to my face as it gives us the delectable sun, joyful trips to the beach and days playing hookey from work, and refreshing splashes in the body of water of your choosing. There is,however,a dark side to this sun drenched season: reruns.Unless it applies to a 1 millionth repeat of Friends or Seinfeld, rerun is certainly one of the most fear inducing words in a couch potato’s vocabulary. However, this entry is dedicated to the peachy keen pieces of entertainment that got me through my favorite season of the year.
1) Number one is a shout out to the fabulous group of same sex loving females on Showtime’s new show The Real L Word. After just one season of anxiously watching who’s fighting, who’s marrying, and who’s hooking up,yours truly has to admit she’s completely hooked! This show is absolutely the antithesis to your normal “scripted” reality show and there’s nothing forced about it (except maybe Rose and Natalie’s relationship-you have to watch for yourself and get lost in the crazy!).For the show itself and for inspiring the scripted drama The L Word (one of my past addictions which I have sought treatment for),this is my top pick for getting me through these summer nights!
2) The anticipation of the film Eat,Pray,Love is enough to give it my number 2 spot-it was one of the only things I wanted to do for my 30th birthday…ahem,I mean my 27th(this computer keyboard has been sticking lately!Bad keyboard!).But the fact that I liked the movie is even more reason to write about it.Though a lot of the movie for me personally was admittedly slow, it’s sooo nice to have an exhilarating break from the action-shoot em up-car chase popcorn pics that invade theaters every year around this time.Though I dislike something being branded a “chick flick” (I encourage all people to get in touch with their inner rom com lover!), this movie was certainly a welcome one and was trying to say something which is more than I can say for other movies that measure their success in v.p.h. (or violence per hour. It’s my blog and I’ll make up terms if I want to!). Oh, and girls, a tanned Javier Bardem who was perfection in the movie is just the sugary treat needed to sweeten the deal. I’m booking my plane ticket to Bali as we speak!
3) As much as I’m a network devotee, my final spot is another delicious dish also served by the folks at Showtime. The new show The Big C stars acting goddess Laura Linney as a woman who finds out she has cancer; her performance is hilarious and heartbreaking all at the same time, and the crew of crazies that surround her (her homeless brother or maturity-challenged husband) are all the more reason to tune in. This show definitely carries the Cassandra stamp of approval and I guarantee you will love it! Taking on the tragic disease of cancer can be tricky, but the actors and writers handle it with humor and spice and everything nice : )
For my summer list of treats, honorary mention goes to the mind bending chaos of Inception (Leo D, will you marry me?), the idiotic fun of Minute to Win It (if you love me, you won’t judge me), and the surprisingly funny Hot in Cleveland (in Betty White I trust!). This concludes my list of seasonal goodies and I hope I’ve inspired you to check out at least one of them (or at the very least, prompted you to get premium cable!). I hope each of you lovely souls has had a fun and sun filled summer, and as September brings new episodes of all your faves I hope your digital recording device gets the workout it so badly deserves! Happy fall t.v. season!!
