Romantic Comedies-R.I.P.?
Greetings all! As winter is fast approaching(say “buh-bye” to bikini season!),love is indeed in the blustery air and with that, I think of my favorite movie genre: romantic comedies! Gender aside,I worship at the altar of rom-coms because who doesn’t want to believe in chance meetings(like in Serendipity),grand romantic gestures(think Ducky and the record store serenade in Pretty in Pink),and happy endings(not the kind you get in an Asian massage parlor though-shame on you for having your mind in the gutter!)?However, I do have to say Hollywood lately has lost its lovin’ feelin’!The films that are supposed to be “romantic comedies” seem to be neither terribly romantic nor particularly comedic. The last few I’ve seen (and in this case I will name names so as to not protect the innocent)-Leap Year,The Backup Plan,When In Rome-were all short on laughs and way too contrived. You have to really struggle to remember the last really good rom com you laid your eyes on.I long for the days of the greats-Sleepless in Seattle or When Harry Met Sally(any early Meg Ryan will qualify for this category!), and even more recent faves like Bridget Jones Diary,How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days, or Something’s Gotta Give. All magically delicious films with characters you love and rooted for,and with laughs that keep you chuckling well into the next sunshiney day.I hope that one of the most treasured film genres isn’t 6 feet under and have faith that Tinseltown will find its inspiration to deliver a truly funny comedy with characters you love to love and hope will live happily ever after. In the meantime,I’ll be dusting off my Totally Awesome dvd edition of the Wedding Singer with stars in my eyes waiting for my own fairytale ending…or John Cusack outside my window with a boombox and the sounds of Peter Gabriel : )
