And the winner is…you again!

Hi fellow entertainment lovers! Though my nose should have been buried in the books,I dedicated the majority of my Sunday evening to the splendor known as the Primetime Emmy Awards. As I watched the 61st telecast with delight and my love of Neil Patrick Harris was once again reaffirmed(like it needed to be though-love you Doogie!!), I noticed the disturbing trend that seems to continually strike major awards shows: the fact that 2 to 3 shows and/or movies seem to win everything! I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s noticed this very frustrating and annoying trend. Certainly anyone who threw in their hard earned money to a 2009 Oscar pool and filled out a faux ballot in hopes they could go home with a slightly fatter wallet has to be fully aware that this goes on, as you likely kept saying to yourself “I should’ve just marked Slumdog Millionaire again!”.

I digress friends. A few years ago I knew a wonderful woman who was a member of the Academy for the Oscars, who attested to the fact that it’s really all just a popularity contest(I shall not reveal her name so as to protect the equally peeved). This brings me back to the Emmy’s and why the show inspired me to write this in the first place. To illustrate my alleged point, bless the amazing Tina Fey and the talented cast of 30 Rock (though quite strange, Alec Baldwin you can do no wrong!), but they seem to win every major comedy award on a yearly basis. Not that it is undeserved, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say I’d like to see some other shows take home the coveted trophy. Hello! I mean who doesn’t adore the lovable boys of Entourage or the hemp-inspired antics of Weeds? There were some pleasant surprises tonight, but in the theme of this blog entry, Grey Gardens won quite a few of awards, along with Into the Storm (if your reaction was “what the heck is that?”, that was my sentiment also.High five!).

All in all, I’m just one person in a world of billions sharing my opinion, but I have no qualms in saying I get a wee ticked when a few things dominate the awards shows. Not that certain shows/films don’t deserve the acclaim, awards, or prestige (ahem, Mad Men, I think you all may be on your way to 30 Rock status), but I myself am pulling for the under dogs and shouting at the t.v. as your one woman cheering section (much to the dismay of my neighbors)!! So as I lay my head down to sleep tonight, I shed a tear for actors like Kevin Dillon, overlooked by Sir Emmy 3 years in a row, and secretly hope that next year things may be different. So until then, I’ll get my pom poms ready : )
